"The poor are politically invisible. It is one of the cruelest ironies of social life in advanced countries that the dispossessed at the bottom of society are unable to speak for themselves. The people of the other America do not, by far and large, belong to unions, to fraternal organizations, or to political parties. They are without lobbies of their own; they put forward no legislative program. As a group, they are atomized. They have no face; they have no voice." -- Michael Harrington, The Other America

As Americans, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to participate in the American dream - work that pays, having enough to eat, raising our children in communities that are safe. Advocates for The Other America (AFTOA) was founded to ensure that all voices are heard and recognized as our nation rebuilds from the economic challenges of recent years. AFTOA is a 501(c)4 lobbying organization that will work with Congress and the Administration to ensure that policies address the real needs of all of our people, families and communities, especially those who are seeking to rejoin the workforce and those who are most vulnerable.
Named for famed author Michael Harrington’s book The Other America, which exposed the depth of poverty in America during the 1960s, AFTOA works to provide effective policy solutions to the economic problems of our time. We believe it is time again to renew the promise and the hope of an America where everyone has the opportunity work and access to a ladder from poverty to economic security and success, that every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential, and our most vulnerable citizens are safe. We believe it is the right thing to do, and it is the right time to do it. We would ask that you would join us in this worthy cause. |
